Entry & visas
- Visa patterns — Many nationalities can get an e‑Visa or visa‑free short stays; requirements vary by passport. Check the Republic of Türkiye e‑Visa site and IATA Travel Centre for your passport.
- Passport validity — Rule of thumb: many countries (including Türkiye for some nationalities) expect passports valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates—verify for your passport.
- Entry checks — Expect routine passport control and possible questions on return/onward tickets and accommodation. Have printed or digital confirmations ready.
Health & safety
- Routine vaccines — Ensure routine vaccines are up to date. Check health advisories from your government and WHO for any current alerts or recommended shots.
- Travel insurance — Carry travel insurance with medical evacuation and COVID‑related coverage; healthcare quality is good in major cities but costs can be high without insurance.
- COVID & other rules — COVID, testing, or entry health rules can change—verify current requirements shortly before travel with official Turkish health or embassy sources.
Money & tipping
- Currency code — Turkish lira (TRY).
- Cards & cash — Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in Istanbul; carry some cash for markets, small vendors and ferries.
- Tipping norm — Tipping is customary but not mandatory: restaurants ~5–10% if service not included; small tips for taxis, porters and guides are common.
Connectivity & power
- Plug & voltage — Plugs: Type C and F. Voltage: 220 V, 50 Hz. Bring a suitable adapter and check device compatibility.
- Mobile & eSIM — Major providers: Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom. Prepaid SIMs and eSIMs are available at airports and shops—bring ID for purchase and registration.
- Wi‑Fi — Free Wi‑Fi available in many hotels, cafes and some transit hubs but quality varies; use a VPN for secure banking.
Local customs & etiquette
- Religion & dress — İstanbul is culturally diverse. When visiting mosques: dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees), remove shoes and be respectful during prayers.
- Greetings — Handshakes are common among men; some conservative people may prefer less physical contact. Follow the local lead.
- Bargaining — Bargaining is normal in markets and bazaars; in shops, fixed prices are standard. Be polite and enjoy the process.
Climate & packing
- Best months — Best times: April–June and September–October for mild weather, fewer crowds and good sightseeing conditions.
- Seasonal notes — Summers (Jul–Aug) can be hot and humid; winters are cool, rainy and occasionally snowy. Layering is useful year‑round.
- What to pack — Pack layered clothing, a light rain jacket, comfortable walking shoes, a sun hat/sunscreen for summer and a warmer coat for winter visits.
Language & key phrases
- Official language — Turkish is the official language; English is widely spoken in tourist areas but less so in neighborhoods and markets.
- Useful phrases — Merhaba (Hello); Teşekkürler / Teşekkür ederim (Thank you); Lütfen (Please). Learning a few Turkish phrases is appreciated.
- Translation tools — Download an offline phrasebook or translation app before arrival for navigation and menu translation in areas with limited English.
Airport & getting around
- Main airports — Istanbul Airport (IST) is the main international hub on the European side; Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) serves many low‑cost and regional flights on the Asian side.
- To city center — From IST and SAW you can use official airport shuttle buses, metro/rail connections where available, taxis or app ride services. Travel time varies widely with traffic.
- Local transport — Istanbul has an extensive tram, metro, bus and ferry network. Buy an Istanbulkart for discounted fares across public transport.
